Senior Information

CURRENT SENIOR INFORMATION:

Hello Class of 2020 and Families,

I wanted to send you this message to update us all on our thinking and planning for our traditional senior activities and how the reality of COVID-19 may impact the ways in which these traditions occur.

First, let me say, on behalf of all our staff and community, that we want to do all we can to honor you and we are deeply committed to doing all we can to create a plan that gives the class of 2020 the special recognition you so deserve. It is unfortunate that this pandemic hit our students, especially our seniors. Seniors - we appreciate you and are so sorry this has happened during this special time for you in your educational career.

With that said, let me try my best to explain where we are at as of now. Please also know that our understanding of COVID 19 is constantly evolving and things could change as we move forward. I will continue to do my best to keep updating you as we learn and plan with these upcoming unknowns.

Graduation Commencement Ceremony

At this point in time, our commencement is scheduled for June 13, which is after the current May 4 stay at home order. We are still holding out hope that by June 13, we will be able to proceed with our ceremony as planned.

After May 4, if the order is extended, we will begin plans and communication for a virtual ceremony to be held at the same time on the 13th. If this does occur, we will also be planning a way to hold our traditional commencement later in the summer or fall once the order is lifted. All of this is to be determined at this time but we want you to know we are planning and considering all options when it comes to developing a way to celebrate your achievement.

Commencement is a celebration ceremony and not our actual graduation. Whatever happens, if you have met all graduation requirements, you will be mailed your diploma. This may mean that your diploma will be mailed to you in June after a virtual graduation with an optional in person ceremony to attend later in the summer if it works with your post high school schedule and plans.

Caps and Gowns

We have been working with Joston’s, your graduation items supplier, and they have developed a system that will allow you to receive your cap, gown, and any other item you purchased in a “drive through” model. More info to come on this but it looks like May 19th will be our day to coordinate this.

If you cannot attend the drive-though pick up, please let Melissa Travis, your graduation coordinator know, and we will coordinate a way to get you your cap and gown. Her email is travism@edmonds.wednet.edu.

Whatever our ceremony ends up looking like, we know we will have one and we want to make sure you have these items for the ceremony.

Senior Recognition Night

We still plan to celebrate our Seniors as we have done in year’s past with our Senior Awards Night on June 2. Much like commencement, we are going to wait and see what develops in these coming weeks. If needed, we may be moving this event to a virtual platform or other online recognition system as well.

Prom -

Sadly, it is highly unlikely that social distancing measures will allow our prom to occur. With this reality in mind, I will be instructing class advisors and officers to cancel prom and work to recover costs we have used for our venue reservation. I will be meeting with officers and your class advisors to see if we can come up with another event we can create with this loss.

It is with a heavy heart that I share this news and our current plans with you. On a personal note, these celebrations are my favorite part of the school year and I was so looking forward to being at them with you. Whatever happens, we will find a way to still celebrate your accomplishments and send you off with the deserved fanfare.

In the meantime, please stay engaged with your classes and your counselor. If you have any questions or worries about how you will meet your graduation requirements please be in touch with your counselor ASAP. We are here to support you and are very proud of all you have done and are doing.

College Financial Aid Information
You only need to fill out one application, either the FAFSA or the WASFA. Complete an online 2020-2021 application for financial aid using your family's 2018 tax return to fill out the application. If you wonder which application to fill out, take this short questionnaire. Some money is first-come, first-served; it is always in your best interest to fill out your application as soon as possible. By filling out a financial aid application, you are considered for grants (free money), work study (jobs on campus), loans (optional money to help pay for college), and some scholarships (free money from colleges & other sources). The colleges you list on your financial aid application will tell you how much money you get (as long as you complete an online admission application for them too). You can find more information about financial aid on the "College Help" page of the Counseling & Career website.
