Principal's Message

Hello Royal Families,

First, I just want to say thank you for all your positive support and understanding as we navigate our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Your positive support and care for others and your families have been a great reminder of what a great community we are.

With that said, I wanted to send a note from me in addition to the message you received from the district about our move to remote learning starting Monday (3/30). Here is what you can expect with this new plan…

*All teachers will begin active engagement with students on district-approved platforms (email, skyward, Canvas, Zoom and others).

*Every Monday teachers will communicate the learning plan and expectations for the week. Example: Maybe an assigned reading to start the week, a zoom meeting to discuss mid-week, and a journal to turn in on Friday.

*On Tuesday – Thursday, staff will be initiating check-ins and other learning opportunities for our students. This may be a class meeting to discuss a topic over zoom or a smaller 1:1 or group check in to offer support on a concept. Our staff has worked out a logistical plan to make sure check-in times do not conflict as much as possible. If your student has a conflict in check-in times, please reach out to the teachers so they are aware.

*On Friday, staff will facilitate turning in of assignments, if applicable, or continue activities as described in Monday’s plan.

*All work that is turned in and assessed will not be graded on the traditional A-F scale. Instead, students will be given either credit or no credit for their work. Staff plan to be flexible, just as we plan to be with them, for opportunities to revise and improve so students can get credit.

*Our goal will be to assign 30 minutes of total learning per day per subject (total time spend on subject including direct instruction). This should mean that your student should have on average 3 hours of school a day. This will vary depending on your student's schedule and their process as a learner but we are hoping to hit close to this mark.

Overall, our goal is to get back into the structure of learning while at the same time serving with compassion and understanding. I am thankful we have such an incredible staff here at LHS who plan to do their very best to make this happen.

Here are ways you can support this effort from home…

*Talk with you student about their schedule and classes and have them review their weekly schedule with you every Monday. If they tell you they do not have anything, check their email and Canvass with them. Often, this will help clear up a misunderstanding or an attempt to avoid learning.

*Have them show you how to get onto Canvas and other platforms they may be using. Our school website has a link on how to do this (our website is down for today but will be back up shortly).

*Give yourself, your student(s), and others a lot of grace right now. School is not going to be perfect as we are all learning something new.

*Reach out to your student’s teachers or me if you have questions.

Spring Break is still on for the week of April 6. Teachers will not be working during this week nor will students be expected to check in. In a way, this timing will be to our advantage as it will give us a week to pause and understand how well this new model is working and what adjustments will be needed after break to improve.

If you family is in need of support, please see this link or reach out to me. We know that these closures are hitting our community hard and we want to do all we can to support you.  https://www.edmonds.wednet.edu/families/family_support

Hang in there and just keep doing your best. That is all we can ask in times like this. We appreciate all you do to support our students and our community!

Please give your kids a big “Go, Royals” from me. I miss seeing them every day and cannot wait for school to reopen.
